A Wobbly Start to the Week
Wendy Kirkland Market Watch Oct 20, 2026
Monday was pretty wobbly. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished higher, while the Dow slipped slightly. The Russell 2000 also ended in positive territory, but none of the major indexes showed much conviction. They moved up, pulled back, and mostly finished near where they started.
So far, the picture has flipped a bit. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq are lower, while the Dow and Russell 2000 are higher. That kind of mixed action has become pretty common lately.
There’s a lot for traders to sort through right now—earnings reports, questions about interest rates, and ongoing global conflicts. With so much uncertainty, the market has been changing direction quickly, sometimes several times in the same day.
What does this mean for traders?
Right now, many traders are keeping things short and simple—getting in, taking a profit when it appears, and getting back out. In a market that can turn quickly, patience and risk management matter more than trying to predict every move.
The rest of the month will be important. A stronger finish could improve the technical picture, while choppier or more negative sessions could make it harder for the market to build momentum heading into next month.
For now, stay flexible, watch the bigger trend, and don’t let one good—or bad—day tell the whole story.
