Markets Open Higher, Uncertainty Remains
Wendy Kirkland Market Update March 16, 2026
Last week ended on a weak note for the markets. On Friday all major indexes opened higher but quickly turned lower and closed near the lows of the day. This pattern showed up across the board, including the Dow, NASDAQ, S&P 500, and Russell. Overall, last week was negative and filled with sharp swings, which is a sign of ongoing uncertainty.
Today looks very different, at least on the surface. The markets opened with a strong gap higher, and early in the session all major indexes were up over one percent. The Dow, NASDAQ, S&P, and Russell all showed solid gains shortly after the open. However, as the morning progressed, prices began to flatten and pull back slightly from their highs. This suggests that while buyers stepped in early, confidence remains fragile.
What makes today’s move harder to read is the lack of a clear reason behind it. There has been no major news, no major earnings reports, and no clear resolution to global issues. Sector movement has also been mixed. Some stocks that were green earlier in the day have turned red, pointing to company‑specific activity rather than a strong, broad market trend.
Looking beyond the daily action, there are signs that longer‑term momentum may be changing. On the monthly Dow chart, the market is down significantly for March even with today’s bounce. Some key indicators are no longer showing the strength seen in recent months. Momentum indicators that had been rising are now weakening, and certain trend signals have officially crossed into negative territory.
These changes do not guarantee a major decline, but they do suggest that the market may be entering a pullback or consolidation phase. Similar patterns in the past have led to periods where the market moved lower before finding a new direction. How the market closes out the month will be important in confirming whether this is just a short‑term pause or something more meaningful.
For now, the market remains unpredictable. Strong up days can still happen, but they are often followed by hesitation and volatility. This environment calls for patience, awareness, and flexibility rather than strong assumptions about direction.
We will continue to monitor both short‑term movements and longer‑term signals and adjust as conditions change. Staying informed and watching how these trends develop over time remains key.
